Wildin' Out

A few weeks ago I was flipping through channels and was stopped dead in my tracks by the trailer for Outkast's new movie musical Idlewild. It was all roosters, flappers, jazz age thuggery, and Macy Gray. Full of snap, crackle, and pop. Everytime I see it the excitement never gets old and I find myself pumped for its release and of course the sdtrk.

Which brings us to this. Shirtless with an acoustic guitar in hand, Andre 3000 performs with a tiny band in the present day south. A storm is a brewing, but is not keeping the chicken from being fried, the pool from being played, or the people inside from shakin what their mommas gave them inside this juke joint. Groovin and survivin becomes a must even as water enters the club, evenutally submerging everyone under water. But the party don't stop. Can't nobody break their stride, can't nobody slow them down, oh no, they got to keep on moving.

The lyrics, the imagery, the setting, and the music? All on point. Sign of the times. Yes. [This along with Juvenile's 'Get Ya Hustle On' and Lil Wayne's 'Georgia..Bush'could be the start of a wonderful playlist of tunes that reflect on the horror and tragedy of Hurricane Katrina.] And the dedication to all of those trying to stay afloat at the end of it all? Just icing on the cake. Big Ups Outkast!... Big Ups!
