Also, he forgot to change into his cardigan as he walked out to the porch, a comforting sartorial shift for both himself and the viewer. Perhaps he would have performed better if the response were produced with a little more panache: maybe opening with a woman looking into her empty wallet and frowning, followed by a shot of a man in line at the grocery store struggling with a stack of coupons as Jindal's voiceover intones, "Economy got you down? Wondering where your bail-out is?" before cutting to a shot of Jindal sitting at his desk, "Well do I have a deal for you! Hi! I'm Bobby Jindal, Governor of Louisiana...""

"...When we talk about race we do tend to talk in simplistic categories, spending more energy on labeling each other than on reasoning together. Consider the entirely predictable battle lines over The New York Post’s infamous stimulus bill cartoon last week, which featured a chimpanzee. One side says the newspaper was insensitive, the other that the protesters have a double standard and are fanning the flames for the sake of attention. Plenty of sound bites, but nothing that moves us forward.

This difficulty, however, is not limited to race. There are few issues of any importance that are not reduced, in public dialogue, to sloganeering and applause lines. Whether we argue over war or the economy, marriage or religion, abortion or guns, we reduce our ideas to just the right size for the adolescent tantrum of the bumper sticker...

Democracy, at its best, rests on a foundation of mutual respect among co-equal citizens willing to take the time for serious debate. After all, even on the momentous issues that divide us, there is usually the possibility that the other side has a good argument. Yet if we paint our opponents as monsters, we owe them no obligation to pay attention to what they have to say..."

I was not surprised when it was announced that Little Miss Jamie Lynn Spears was pregnant last year. I was not surprised that two teenagers had consensual sex, probably said "fuck it" on the protection tip (well not in those exact words, but you get what I am saying), and wound up with a baby in the end. Yes, the announcement itself was surprising and unexpected, but in the end, what went down was not. Why? Cause I too am a young person in the United States of America. I know of the rampant miscommunication that exists between kids and parents on the subject (or the complete lack thereof of any dialogue). I have also been there (As in, a teenager surrounded by those walking the walk and/or talking the talk. I ain't got nobody pregnant or anything), and to say that my peers shared or thought about sharing "lover's spit" like it was going out of style from the age of maybe 15 or so all the way through high school, is an understatement. That's why I can get what Little Miss Bristol Palin is trying to say and/or get at here with her commentary (not 100% behind the comment), just wondering how the leader of the pack, good old Miss Sarah Palin herself, feels about it all.

Because Republicans are isolated in that parallel universe and believe all the noise in its echo chamber, they are now as out of touch with reality as the “inevitable” Clinton campaign was before it got clobbered in Iowa. The G.O.P. doesn’t recognize that it emerged from the stimulus battle even worse off than when it started. A proud centrist. For that is what the senators who ended up calling the tune on the stimulus bill just accomplished.

Even if the original Obama plan — around $800 billion in stimulus, with a substantial fraction of that total given over to ineffective tax cuts — had been enacted, it wouldn’t have been enough to fill the looming hole in the U.S. economy, which the Congressional Budget Office estimates will amount to $2.9 trillion over the next three years.

"...It would be highly irresponsible for Congress to accept the Republicans’ wrongheaded calls to cut back on the stimulus portions of the economic package, and shortchange longer-term spending on health care, schools and infrastructure. We applauded Mr. Obama when he said, “The time for action is now because we know that if we do not act, a bad situation will become dramatically worse. Crisis could turn into catastrophe.”

Mr. Obama needs to remind Republicans that he won the election on those terms. And he is going to have to get tough with Democrats. So will House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, who have been too timorous about wielding their power...

...We know Mr. Obama is capable of uniting disparate groups. That comes with a tendency toward conciliation, which we admire, but we hope he resists it now. Mr. Obama made concessions on the House version of the economic plan, and no Republican voted for it.

The president must explain to Americans that a strong economic stimulus is essential for their economic recovery. If Senate Republicans still want to filibuster, Mr. Reid should call them on it. No filibuster on this urgent a bill could withstand the certain public outrage."

The Haves, and The Have Nots.

The nation's conversation on the Senate's contuning struggle to reach a consesus on President Obama's Giant Econmic Stimulus Package (along with the conversations and actions going on in the Senate to reach said conseus) is still in full swing. Here with a few words of his own on the matter is New York Times Op-Ed Columinst, and Nobel Peace Prize winning Economist Paul Krugman:

"A not-so-funny thing happened on the way to economic recovery. Over the last two weeks, what should have been a deadly serious debate about how to save an economy in desperate straits turned, instead, into hackneyed political theater, with Republicans spouting all the old clichés about wasteful government spending and the wonders of tax cuts.

It’s as if the dismal economic failure of the last eight years never happened — yet Democrats have, incredibly, been on the defensive. Even if a major stimulus bill does pass the Senate, there’s a real risk that important parts of the original plan, especially aid to state and local governments, will have been emasculated.

Somehow, Washington has lost any sense of what’s at stake — of the reality that we may well be falling into an economic abyss, and that if we do, it will be very hard to get out again..."
