The Good Times Are Killing Me

So there's this band. You may have heard of them. Real big in the 80's... The Smiths... I think that's it. So yeah huge band. Nice run. Big fallout. Seperate ways. Sexual ambiguity. Comfy solo careers. Etc. Said band also had a sick guitarist that was just as much of a backbone for the group as the coy lead singer was. Cut to nearly two decades or so later. Johnny Marr and Isaac Brock, lead singer for Modest Mouse connect and begin to pen and craft songs for the follow up to MM's wonderful and hugely successful album from 2004 Good News For People Who Love Bad News.

Nothing more. Just some small collaborating and sharing of ideas. Until yesterday when Rollingstone.com announced that Marr, in addition to writing and playing guitar on the album is, for the moment, a full fledged member of Modest Mouse. He's even hitting the road with them in the fall.

Brock tells Rolling Stone:

“He made a cautious commitment to write and record with us, and then the tighter we got, he was like, ‘okay, let’s tour too,’” Brock said. “Then he was pretty much a member of the band - not pretty much. He’s a full blown member of the band. It’s really fuckin’ nice.”

Now I am not a huge Smiths fan. Actually never been turned on to them or tried to really get into them. Missed the boat. But I have heard and read good things and Good News For People Who Love Bad News was my pick for album of the year in 2004. I'm just excited for the new material tentatively titled We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank and I hope the addition of Johnny Marr garners more interest in listeners for this talented and highly entertaining band.
