POP...LIFE!: Tauwan's Top 25 albums of 2006

13. The Black Keys-Magic Potion

Just two dope boys with some drums and riffs holed up in a basement churning out some hits. For their fourth record vocalist/guitarist Dan Auerbach and drummer Patrick Carney stick to the formula without sounding stale. Opener Just Got To Be plugs in and hammers away, replicating the sound of a late night blues band by the bayou, setting the mood and tone for another down home blues rocking affair. Heavy or downtempo, the boys bring it and soak it all in genuine honky tonk emotion and blues. For 47 minutes Auerbach and Carney stick to that formula, holding on to the age old mantra of if ain't broke don't fix it. And over the course of these eleven songs don't a damn thing sound broke.

12. The Presets-Beams

Something strange happens when you play track two on this long player. The synths kick in like a rallying cry and one by one the beat picks up. Your body starts to shake a little bit and your head starts to bob. And by the time the bridge kicks in and the hand claps get going, you're already gone and lost control. I think it's what the cool kids call dancing. With Beams, Sydney based duo The Presets keep their intentions locked soley on one place: the dancefloor. The mystique, the sex appeal, the sweat inducing melodies, it does something to the duo, it lures them in, it excites them, it makes them wanna lose control for long durations of time. Beams is no different. It's an excercise in electro rock get down, as vital to one's health as a proper diet or a daily dose of vitamins.
