POP...LIFE!: Tauwan's Top 25 albums of 2006

11. Arctic Monkeys-Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not

When you flip through the booklet for the Arctic Monkey's debut you aren't hit with the typical liner notes and thank yous to management and A&R people. Instead you are hit with a pictorial narrative of young twentysomethings out and about in London town, spillng out of taxi cabs, puffing on cigarettes, downing alcohol, and reveling in the adolescent euphoria of their youth. It is a fiiting set of images for a band who music and showmanship bristles at the seams with youth, energy, confidence, and attitude. There's a reason why the British press couldn't get enough of these lads. Less forced and more manic than say American counterparts Panic! at the Disco or Fall Out Boy, the Arctic Monkeys talk shit, bang the gong, and revel in sin without a care in the world. One would be wise to put on his or her dancing shoes and join in on the fun.

10. Dirty Sanchez-Dirty Sanchez

A hunk, a dude who looks like a lady, and a quiet man with one of those over the shoulder keyboard guitars walk into a bar. The crowd goes silent. Even the jukebox comes to a complete stop as all eyes are fixated on the door. The trio walk slowly from the door to the stage. DJ Barabeau gets behind his boards, Mario cracks his neck, and Jackie Beat grabs the mic. The music starts. "Suck it/suck it/get it wet and fuck it/go somewhere and hide it/somewhere dark in private." " Yeah/Lick it/lick it/get it wet and stick it/go somewhere and hide it/somewhere dark and private." It's on now. And there's no turning back. Sometimes music takes itself too seriously, even electro, but with a band like Dirty Sanchez, cheese, smut, and irony looks good and they wear it well. You'll be hard pressed to find another cd that applauds fucking on the dancefloor while at the same time showing no love for youth and beauty. Get pass the title. Get pass the fact that many of the lead vocals are provided by a man in drag [and done quite well I must add] and shake that ass.
