POP...LIFE!: Tauwan's Top 25 albums of 2006

5. Justin Timberlake-Futuresex/Lovesounds

Also known as the headphone masterpiece...

Call this the year of ambition. The year when big time pop stars grew up and took risks, expanded their palettes, and thought outside the box. Nelly Furtado did it. Christina Aguilera did it. And so did
  • Beyonce Knowles.
  • But no one in the pop arena did it quite as masterfully as JT and his partner in crime "Timbaland a.k.a. Thomas Crown." Like a well crafted vinyl from back in the day, the record is split into two halves. Side A is Justin doing what he does best; suave, confident, and hellbent on letting the world know. Songs bleed into each other, and go on til the groove has finally had its say and decides to move on to the next track. Side B slows things down a bit. By this point you're hip to Justin's swagger. Three Six Mafia make a guest appearance for the clubs [yet again], Justin continues to court, and then reflects on it all as the wheels fall off and the disc comes to an end. Like Chad and P did with the Clipse, Timbo [along with Will.i.am on one track an Rick Rubin on another]provides Justin with all the musical goodies creativity can buy, but unlike the Clipse, Justin is pushed, stretched, and forced to get loose letting himself become an instrument, singing high, dropping low, headlining the party and reveling in his Futuresex/Lovesounds.
KEY TRACKS: My Love/Lovestoned(I think she knows)*/What Goes Around Comes Around

*Sure to be one of my favorite songs of all time. Words can't explain what this song does to me.

i would like, when your list is all done, to have a long list sent to me.

it's been the highlight of the end of the year for the past few years.

in other news, was looking for your blog, found lucy's blog, and found stuff from freshman year, namely this:

"having a big problem with the music here. is the reason i went to see ferd tonight, to get some good stuff in. we'd just gotten back from the coffeehouse where we saw a bunch of upperclassmen do mostly bad stuff then tauwan and his roommates do a really good version of "you gotta have faith" or whatever the title of that is. tauwan is about five foot three with really good hair. he's a punkish emo black guy. rock."

    miss you buddy.

nardito, tv on the radio is so overhyped...

love was good, but i wish there'd been more experimentation. the drive my car mashup is the most memorable. 15 seconds of blackbird leading into yesterday? not that exciting...

I, like Ferd, can not get into TV on the Radio. I am sure I will in due time, but for now I just can't.
