PUT THE NEEDLE ON IT!: Tauwan's Top Albums of 2008

American Gothic.

13/The Black Keys/Attack & Release

Danger Mouse.

This album was produced by Danger Mouse.

Yes, that Danger Mouse.

Who?

The Black Keys!

Yes, I said the Black Keys.

No cause for alarm though, for this is still a tried and true, “prickly thorn, but sweetly worn” Black Keys album.

Attack & Release.

Attack that which ails ya. Deal with it, let it go. "You got yours, and I got mine", these thick, haunting treatises sung deep from the trenches of the soul, and wrapped in the musical and sonic textures of soul singin’ rock and roll troubadours of days past like Bo Diddley, Screamin’ Jay Hawkins, and Ike Turner. [SIDENOTE: Here's a little story that must be told. And it goes a little something like this: Ike Turner hooks up with Danger Mouse. Danger calls the boys in this band known to Keys to add a little midwestern honky tonk flava to Ike's set. Ike checks out midway through. (God rest his soul) And the Keys and Danger are left to their own devices, and gives us this.]

Pop this disc in, sit back, and it’ll cure what ails ya. Let the escalating organ take ya to church at the tail end of All You Ever Wanted; take lead singer Dan Auerbach’s side as his voice bellows and rises as he recounts his times spent with Psychotic Girls full of nothing but “LIES! LIES! LIES!” Dark, soulful, and utterly convincing with a damn near southern fried sheen, Attack & Release keeps the spirit of those aforementioned soul singin’ troubadours alive, one torch burnin' composition at a time.
