PUT THE NEEDLE ON IT!: Tauwan's Top Albums of 2008

15/MGMT/Oracular Spectacular

First there was a Time to Pretend. And then I went beyond track one and got swept up in the whimsical charms of Weekend Wars. And then Electric Feel kicked up for the first time, and you could not tell me that there were any other songs on this disc, cause that one kept calling me back. And then came the summer…. and BBQs…. and hackey sack games on the lawn…and drinks… and iPod speaker decks. The trappings of this one midsummer evening in July was no different from the rest as I quickly gravitated towards the iPod and selected a few tunes to soundtrack our tranquil summer afternoon. As the day the met the night, one song in particular just had to be played: MGMT’s Kids. It was my new hotness, my new Electric Feel, my new beat. on. re. peat. Each listen would reveal something new, adding yet another layer to the composition, filling it out, making the ear candy more delectable and sweet. A thoughtful lyric here, the sound of kids having a laugh there, a thick keyboard and synths break/harmonies in the key of life, etc. Eventually I took a step back from the singles and playing favorites, and let myself revel in the Oracular Spectacular, succumbing to the experimental whims and musical flights of fancy present in every track. Each listen revealed something new, adding yet another layer to the composition as a whole, filling it out, satisfying my audiovisual cravings with its dips into cosmic stratospheres (Weekend Wars, Pieces of What), frolics in the playground (Kids), and buoyant raves unto the joy fantastic (Time to Pretend, Electric Feel). It’s enough to send one’s intrigue and enthusiasm through the roof, and make the words flowing through my fingertips and onto the page read like overblown hyperbole, but it’s warranted, for Oracular Spectacular is an ambitious piece of work that refuses to sit still/let its many colors hide in the darkness.
