PUT THE NEEDLE ON IT!: Tauwan's Top Albums of 2008

25/Kings of Leon/Only By the Night

Sometimes listening is not enough. The act of pressing play, sitting back, and merely letting the music flow through your ears gets old, predictable, tiresome even. Sometimes, just sometimes, you want to also feel it. You want the music of that girl, that guy, those boys in the band to reach out and touch your soul, and connect with you on a personal level, offering up something of which you can relate, as is the case with the Kings of Leon’s latest, Only By the Night. Emotional imagery (and clarity) springs to life in every ebb, flow, and swell of the boys’ music, and Caleb’s unabashedly naked voice. Listen as a darling little temptress calls him Closer, and the music stops, and then starts, and the rhythm section kicks into gear; listen to the drawn out way in which Caleb mimics one girl’s effort to see him craawwl for her affection; listen to his plea for someone like him to be used by someone like you; listen to the band bask in the open prairie of a revelry, or dote on a love as hot as fire. Listen and see images of yearning, finger pointing, and expressive displays of affection come to life. Listen, relate, and feel it.
KEY TRACKS: Sex on Fire/Use Somebody/Revelry
