dude... incredible. : the albums, 2014.

19/perfume genius/too bright

mike hadreas is no different from you and me. he exists, he lives, and he is a human being. slender, frail, a man. he is vulnerable, and he is homosexual. perfume genius. he is, as a combination of all these things (to many), too bright. he attracts stares and raises eyebrows, forever causing a reaction by merely existing or without trying, but here, with too bright, the stir he causes is deliberate, and unabashedly in place. "i wear my body like a rotted peach. you can have it if you handle the stink. i'm as open as a gutted pig..." he sings midway through,  reminding us (in case you forgot) that this is him and these songs are his, and he is proud to wear these hats and be in this skin, throwing the discomfort he may cause you back in your face, fiercely (don't you know your queen?...). too bright is slightly confrontational baroque pop of the highest order; it is naked and honest and unafraid, with strength and emotion dripping from every chord. it is mike hadreas, perfume genius, existing. vulnerable, and human. no family is safe when he sashays.
