"Swag at a hundred and climbin' baby..."
FOURTEEN/GRADUATION/KANYE WEST
There's a lot to smile at, adore, and admire throughout the course of this fifty minute disc. One such moment occurs during Track 11, The Glory. Top of the track. Kanye sings along for a couple seconds as the sample coos beneath him, as if right here, right now, caught on tape is the moment Kanye put two and two together, not sure of where he was going, but sure that this shit, this shit right here? Straight fire baby. It's an incredibly solitary and humanizing moment, highly evocative of that spark that exists between any music fan and his or her favorite artist, musician, or track; and it also a solid representation of the fire that burns brightly throughout Graduation, the third long player from crate digging, art student extraordinaire, Mr. West, "Mr. By himself he so impressed." It's an all too easy tactic to compare an artist's album to that of a work of art, but piece no. 3 in Kanye's collection is simply that; what once was a blank canvas is now a wide, large, and expansively colored composition created with only the finest of mixed media: deeply introspective lyrics, samples that come out of left field and state their piece without being too obvious, and a delivery that's not rushed, but louder and clearer, filled with an intense hunger [for acceptance. for approval. for an audience] as if the distance between one's mouth and the microphone is non-existent. It's an exhilarating experience that rewards the listener at every turn. Man, why can't all records be this easy?
