One-A-Day! Tauwan's Top 25 Albums of 2007!

From the makers of POP...LIFE!: Tauwan's Top 25 albums of 2006.

FIFTEEN/THE CON/TEGAN & SARA

DISCLAIMER: The following is a dramatization. It may or may not have happened.

Calm. Quiet. Alone. Two Girls. Sisters. Twins to be exact. Split Screen. Separate rooms. Slam. Doors close shut. A look of exhaustion washes over both girls' faces. The day is done. Calm. Quiet. Alone. Backpacks hit the floor. Sighs of relief are exhaled. Looks of exhaustion are on full display. Feet head towards vanity mirrors and dressers. There it lies, the book in which the words hit the page. Hands reach for the book. Feet head towards places of rest. Up. Down. Flop onto the bed. Both girls look up to the heavens, chew on pens. "If you take me I am yours/I'm/I am running circles..." Stop. "I just want back in your head!" Stop. "I felt you in my legs before I met you." Stop. Both girls look up and ahead as if the next thought lies off in the distance. Hold. Both pens hit their respective pages. Screen fades to black. Music is cued. Two voices, in unisom, in darkness welcome you to this, the Diary of Tegan & Sara. You think you know, but you have no idea. They're sure of it. I'm sure of it. Before this album, Tegan & Sara were just another indie act bubbling under the radar, more known to me for their personal tastes and physical asymmetrical attributes [you know what I am getting at]than the music they were putting on wax. But not anymore, for in 2007 the sibling duo gave the listening public an album steeped in sentiments and emotions that are wonderfully and unabashedly unapologetic. [sample lyric pulled out of the air: "Nobody likes to but I really like to cry." Sung without the slightest hint of triteness or irony] And the music is right along with them. Guitars revving like engines [the anxious new wave sampling Hop A Plane]; drums announcing themselves loudly, often coalescing with the surrounding instruments in an intense and dramatic fashion, echoing the thoughts expressed on the page [press play on the brief, three minute I was young, I didn't know no better but I got this now track Nineteen]; And of course, when the time calls for it, guitars gently weep. So kudos to Death Cab For Cutie's Chris Walla for aiding in the sound and feel of Tegan and Sara's The Con. And kudos to these two young ladies who refuse to sugarcoat what needs to be said and what should be done.
