TWENTY-TWO/UNDER THE BLACKLIGHT/RILO KILEY
A lot of people hate on Los Angeles, a place where rain is infrequent, and the sun refuses to shine; a place where people are "born on brightened piers to gypsy mothers and a bucket of tears", and yet still, if one plays his or her cards right, he or she will makes it out okay. In other words, it can be quite the Dreamworld. And while it may not be the city that never sleeps, we who reside within its city limits know how to operate under both the neon lights, and of course, Under the Blacklight. Just ask Rilo Kiley, whose So Cal sensibilities shine through on this, their first disc for the big leagues. The damp, booze filled, late night stomp [or shall I say romp?] of lead single Money Maker; the effervescent ride along the coast that is the Blake Sennett helmed Dreamworld; the Latin tinged enclave of Dejalo; And of course the bare bones, lo-fi, hip-hop leaning Give a Little Love. Each of these tracks, plus the remaining seven that make up the disc coast by like a wave, playing up those aforementioned So Cal sensibilities and all the [new found] backing vocals, smoldering and sunny harmonies [harmonies that, it must be said, absolutely soar when given the opportunity. Check that bridge on Dejalo], and utter clarity on young, unrequited love that we have come to know and love from Rilo Kiley.
KEY TRACKS: Silver Lining/Breakin Up/Smoke Detector
