Silent Alarm.
16/Grizzly Bear/Veckatimest
“Would you always?/Maybe Sometimes?/Make it easy?/Take your time?”
And so goes the refrain for the heavenly quiet storm of a lead single that is Two Weeks, track two from this, the third-full length LP from the fellas who call themselves Grizzly Bear. Aside from being immaculately sung and executed line/harmony, those few questions contained in that refrain, when removed from the shackles of their suspicious asking tone - “maybe sometimes/make it easy/take your time”…-, become an accurate reflection of the ebb and flow, color and the shape of Veckatimest. Songs present themselves humbly, beats building slowly, strings flourishing, vocals soaring, creeping up softly, taking you to a place, invading your cerebellum politely, soothing you with their dizzyingly hypnotic bits and pieces. The vocal harmonization floating like angels on the bridge of Cheerleader; the bounce of the keys accompanying the clarity of Ed and the gang’s vocals on Two Weeks; The slow build of the composition, and inclusion of strings and orchestral affectations on the album’s opener Southern Point. Bits and pieces of dizzyingly hypnotic elements coming together to form a clear, polished, and melancholic collection of tunes that almost sound as if they were sent from above. Grizzly Bear, Veckatimest.
