I can make you dance if you want me to.
19/Discovery/LP
An experiment. Two guys from two different bands (Wes Miles or Ra Ra Riot, and Rostam Batmanglij of Vampire Weekend, respectively), coming together as one to get lost in the sound, doing whatever it takes to take you (as well as themselves), to Rhythm City. On this collaborative LP from the multi-talented duo, beats strut on repeat, as Wes and Rostam trade vocals, paint vivid colors with sound, and apply an everything but the kitchen sink aesthetic to their flavorful electronic compositions. Taking cues from such forward thinking and cacophonic leaning forbearers as Kraftwerk, Prince, and Roger and Zapp, to name a few, the boys of Discovery turn up the dials, bang the keys, and ring the bells, riding atop these aforementioned sounds that stop and go, breathe and stop, and st-st-st-stutter, as they explore every morsel of a beat, and sound their instruments/materials make. The joy of this album is allowing yourself to get lost in it all as well, catching the beats and bobbing ya head to a dub-step background on a bridge (Swing Tree), a midtempo, electronic lite, 2-Step banger with a heart of gold (Carby, featuring guest vocals from Rostam’s other bandmate Ezra Koenig), or an heartfelt skittering auto-tuned love song (Can You Discover). Hell, even the sythny, slow moving auto-tuned cover of the Jackson’s 5 I Want You Back will take you to a place if you let it/want it to, a place where claps, snaps, 2 steppin’, and hip shakin’ abounds. Discover it. Get lost in it. Let yourself go and fall victim to the sounds.
