Songs about girls.
17/Chester French/Love the Future
Word on the street is this album was four years in the making, recorded over the course of a four year undergrad collegiate career at Harvard University. While their peers were off rowing in Crew, attending a capella rehearsals, and forming bonds via fraternities and sororities and the like, D.A. Wallach and Max Drummey were busy putting in work, and crafting this, the LP/sound that I think Weezer has been trying to perfect and craft since the Green Album, which also just so happens to be one of the best pop-rock albums of the year. Clouded in all the tight constructs of breezy, effervescent pop, as well as strings, keys, and occasional orchestral instrumentation, Love the Future bounces along with its heart on its sleeve, fawning over girls “who wanna run it all”, stunt in “Jimmy Choos”, and, of course, “crave affection”. At the helm bringing it all home are the vocals, lyrics, and studio handiwork of the boys in the band, D.A. and Max. Songs snap, crackle, and pop with sugary flourishes and dizzying instrumentation, while never veering too far off into totally oft-kilter territory. The fellas shine in every musical setting they set foot in, whether it’s a gorgeous swell of some strings accompanied by the beat of a Toy Soldier’s drum (Fingers), updated Doo Wop Buddy Holly like rock (Jimmy Choos), or earnest saloon worthy stomps (Beneath the Veil). Girls may be hard and difficult to get a grip on, but the music, for these two, that ain’t even a problem.
