23/Peaches/I Feel Cream
Will.i.am must be pissed. Prior to the release of the Black Eyed Peas latest disc The E.N.D., Will landed a part in that Wolverine flick filmed largely in Australia or Thailand or some place. During the promo tour for The E.N.D. he talked at length to anyone who would listen about the music he heard in the clubs while filming Wolverine, how those non stop, don’t stop til you get enough, make it clap, break a sweat vibes would permeate the new BEP disc. In the end, the Black Eyed Peas gifted unto the public a disc whose heart is in the right place, that is also, unfortunately, largely sophomoric, mediocre, and juvenile, when what they really wanted to create was an LP like this one right here, a non stop, don’t stop til you get enough, make it clap, break a sweat disc that sounds less like an LP, and more like a DJ Set from one joy filled sweat drenched night at the club.
By now, one would think the “gimmick” and/or persona that is Peaches would have grown old and tiresome, but time and time again she proves us all wrong, and on this collection of tunes right here, Peaches puts the emphasis where it matters most: the music. Those extended moments where the beat just plays, and the vocals just shimmer? Those highs, lows, rises, and falls, and in your face roughness? You can thank Simian Mobile Disco for that, as they mixed nine of the tracks here, with Soulwax, Shapemod, and Digitalism mastering the other three. In the end though, all credit must be given to the lady at the mic stand, “not giving a fuck”, begging you to talk to her, and feeling cream on the dancefloor as she channels many a strong, in your face disco diva of years past. Sorry, Will.i.am. The Black Eyed Peas didn’t take it to the clubs, Peaches did. Boom Boom POW!
KEY TRACKS: Serpentine (I don’t give a…pt.2)/I Feel Cream/Mommy Complex
