DOO-WOPS & HOOLIGANS: The Albums, 2011.

Blessed Union of Souls.

18/CULTS/CULTS

CULTS are Brian and Madeline. Two starry eyed, lovelorn kids from the streets of NYC. A real life couple who, together, make beautiful music. And this is their debut. A taut and compact grouping of lovesick lullabies rooted in the "shoo-bop-shoo-bops" of pop music's past. These pulls from doo wops and girl groups past gives the album a comfortable sense of familiarity that the duo feeds and builds upon quite successfully, proven each time Madeline steps to the mic to read (or yes, "WAIL") from the lyrics sheet. Hers is a voice that is childlike, vulnerable, and idiosyncratic, and it helps lock in that CULTS sound; A sound that, no matter the influences, is all theirs here.
