"BANDZ A MAKE HER DANCE!": The Albums, 2012

09/Joey Bada$$/1999

THEM: "Don't talk about it, be about it."
HIM: "Okay."

"What, what the rap audience ain't ready for is a real person. You know what I wanna say, a real N-*-*-*-A. I'm comin' at 'em a hundred percent real. I ain't compromisin' nathan. Anybody that talk about me got problems you know what I'm sayin'? It's gon' be straight up like if I was a street person. That's how I'm comin' at the whole world, and I'm bein' real about it and I'mma grow with my music."

-2Pac as heard on Track Two, Waves.

17. This dude is 17. Can you believe this shit? Them some big words to be tossing out like nothing on your mixtape there, bruh. And they come early on. But the thing is though, those words up there, when uttered and heard, ring true and aren't questioned. Joey is indeed coming correct with it, as you soon find out the more you let the music here play. 1999 adheres to that age old rule of backing up that shit you constantly stay talking. Ready to be put on, and eager to be heard, 1999 is another mission statement from a young mc shooting for his dreams/hitting the booth to boost his esteem. And stunt. And show love for his city ("Big ups to Brooklyn, home of the realest."), his team, his people, his peers, & most importantly Hip-Hop. The sounds of Joey's youth and home state in the 90s permeate the tape (Big ups to the beats and instrumentals courtesy of MF Doom, Statik Selektah, Chuck Strangers, and J Dilla), as does Joey's mastery of the reflective/the punchline/the swag/and flow needed to not just be heard but keep you listening, and coming back for more. Streets is watching Joey. Streets is watching.
