"BANDZ A MAKE HER DANCE!": The Albums, 2012

17/the xx/coexist

coexist is the soundtrack of the countless conversations that erupt over the course of a relationship. chats with each other concerning each other; words left unspoken; conversations with the voices in our head. consuming us. at each other. alone.

"did I hold too tight? did I not let enough light in?"

"we used to be closer than this."

"I always thought it was a shame that we have to play these games..."

"what have you done with the one I love?"

"do you still believe in you in me?..."

these thoughts linger. haunt our minds. haunt romy, haunt  jamie, haunt oliver. reverberate and echo; as does the music. pulsating like a heartbeat, percolating below the surface, adamantly present when necessary. romy and oliver trade vocals in a tone and manner that never rises above conversational, and never goes confrontational, despite the subject matter. these hopes and misgivings are fittingly enveloped in a palette awash with both the boom and quiet; light painterly flourishes of ethereal shoegaze tempos and sensual r&b touches. This is music that states its case clearly at its own pace, as is the trio's forte. such leisure and breathing room may not always exist between two lovers, but here it all coalesces swimmingly.
