04/Miguel/Kaleidoscope Dream
In 2012, Miguel wanted to be heard. In 2012 Miguel wanted to be heard because he had something to say. In 2012, Miguel wanted to be heard because he had something cooking up his sleeve that you just had to hear. A slight step away from what you have heard from him before. He didn't do so by blatantly announcing "I'M DIFFERENT!" in a single or club banger. Nor did he do so by making some bold proclamation like he invented sex. Miguel instead went into the lab knowing who he is as an artist and where he intends to go, put in work, and with Kaleidoscope Dream said, "Here, My Dear. You think you know, but you have no idea..."
This knowing, determined craftsmanship is the main reason why Kaleidoscope Dream is a such a revelation. An all killer, no filler long player in which Miguel channels his inner El Debarge and Prince inclinations to both expand upon and offer us a full glimpse into the palette that is his musical talent and taste. Showing and proving, alone. No skits, no guest artists, no spoken interludes. No time for that. Allow him to play for a minute, and be seduced. By the confidence, the sex appeal, and complete control. By the come ons, the falsettos, and the cornerstones of modern R&B that are heightened and colored by the Playboy behind the mic. "Please, have a seat", this album seems to say, "I got this. Do you trust me?..." Peer into this Kaleidoscope and you'll have no choice but to answer yes, and tag along. Trust me. And trust him. He's got this. Proven and shown.
