A few thoughts that popped off in the interim:
"Busy watching Jay Z try too hard..."
"There's something slightly odd about this whole affair. I mean, I'm watching it, but what am I supposed to take away from this?"
"It's like somebody threw a house party, guests included Jay Z, & at some point in the night someone was like, "HEY! YO JAY! YOU FEEL LIKE RAPPIN?! Yeah, yeah. YOU SHOULD RAP RIGHT NOW! YO! YO! THROW ON MCHG!"
"Okay, I get this on some level, & there's some interesting underlying themes poppin' off involving gazes & separation & class."
"Or maybe I'm just reading too much into it, and just need to let Jay Z be great.
"2 camps here: He "made himself art". You either will think this was BOSS or completely pretentious & too much. No middle ground.
"Jay Z seems to be on a "MY PRESENCE IS A PRESENT! KISS MY ASS!" tip. & therefore the art lies in getting thru and manipulating the game(s)"
"Hence the Picasso and Basquiat references. But he's letting the desire to be a work of art/GOD overpower the actual art at times & in places."
"Those artists stood out cause of who they were yes, but also because of what they brought with them. Gotta remember that Jay. Gotta remember."
"It's not enough to just be present. This is also why "I Am a God" is easier to swallow on
"The manipulation of art beyond surface level theatrics is in full effect on that one. Onward & Upward. Whatever I don't know. Yeezus. Haha."
