10/ariel pink/dedicated to bobby jameson

This one's for Bobby. For the day his music died. For the outside hands and mouthpieces with a note or something to say. This one's for you. From A. Pink with love. Another rollicking stomp through funkytown, lost in his cosmic space. Bubblegum dreams with Kitchen Witches and Dreamdate Narcissists with Dark Santas and fantastical artistic flourishes...

That feels like heaven.

Playing like a wonderfully curated playlist from the 1960s, Ariel's Dedicated to Bobby Jameson gets loose on Bobby’s behalf by being lighthearted and fancy free. So here's to you Bobby. Dedicated to Bobby Jameson. A simply gorgeous and worthy salute.

10/lcd soundsystem/how do you sleep?

Things fall apart. And when that thing is a close bond or friendship, it can be devastating and damn near earth shattering. Especially if things ended on a sour note, and shortly thereafter came your "you know what?" moment after taking stock of the totality of the now gone relationship. Somehow, someway, James Murphy and company manages to capture all of this energy and channel it in the viciously deployed and caustic "How Do You Sleep?". Placed directly at the heart of American Dream, "How Do You Sleep?" enters with a vengeance, expertly crafting the act of airing out grievances and the art of the slow burn in song form. Nine minutes of pointing the finger, and being heard, and sweating it out, cause sometimes it's the only way to get over and cope when things fall apart.

DON'T LOOK BACK IN ANGER : THE ALBUMS, 2017.

11/miguel/war & leisure

There's a riot going on, and trouble's on our mind. And the sunshine often steps aside to make way for stormy weather, and yet...

"Everything's gonna be alright."

Don't believe me? Believe Miguel, who, on War & Leisure, asks that you take him up on his word and let him show you. With War & Leisure, Miguel soothes and consoles you, becoming that bridge over troubled waters during your time with him and this album. "Take a shot, make a friend, just enjoy the moment." "Don't sleep you gotta stay up." "Celebrate everyday like a birthday." When coupled with this music, no further encouragement to keep strong and carry on is needed, as Miguel's unfailing musicality and confidence looms large, consuming you. Need to get caught up in a effervescent groove? He got you. Want to stay woke and engage in conversations on the the state of the world? He got you. Let him help you work it out til its turnt out, get over and carry on. With War & Leisure, Miguel reminds us what the look of freedom is through his sounds of freedom: expressive vocals, an unflinching snarl, and guitar laced R&B mixed in with uptempo Prince like excursions. It's so good it feels criminal riding the waves beneath the pineapple skies with him, but it is a necessary respite from the ways of the world , and a reminder that, despite it all, you gotta keep your head up.

DON'T LOOK BACK IN ANGER : THE ALBUMS, 2017.

12/ema/exile in the outer ring

Jesus wept,
When she told you the truth,
Of secrets kept.
It's just something that
The outer ring people do.

Out in the ether,
And into the great beyond.
This place out in exile
(where she tells you the truth).

Erika. M. Anderson,
EMA.

Exiled in the Outer Ring.

A personal exile where she has the space to just be.
Where she can reflect on the stories of famous men she can't see herself in.
But steal from them?
She will do.

She too will be ferocious.
(it's just what the outer ring people do)
She too, will stand tall and walk in her artistry;
Be expressive, attack, and destroy.

35, Nihilistic, and Female,
Riding atop stark, menacing soundscapes;
Digging deep into the raw, atmospheric noise and inner reaches of her mind,
Til there's nothing left but blood and chalk.

Exiled in the outer ring,
Knee deep in the sludge.
Alive in the loud,
And present in the soft.

And in awe we remain, with each listen and return.
As she tells us these truths of secrets kept,
Exiled in the outer ring.

(It's just something we outer ring folks do.)

DON'T LOOK BACK IN ANGER : THE ALBUMS, 2017.

13/charli xcx/number 1 angel

Like many of us, Charli XCX is a dreamer out here in the atmosphere just wanting to let her hair down and disappear, spread her wings, and fly. Luckily for us, this act of letting her hair down and flying away to a place of euphoria entails bringing us along for the ride via a collection of bangers. And on Number 1 Angel, the ride is divine, and the task of dropping tracks that bang is never ending. Over the course of this 40 minute mixtape, Charli is your girl, here to soundtrack her (and your) life in the daydream, and the moments held that we can't let slip away. Over your vanity, and not wanting to care anymore, Charli gives in to one of the unspoken, universally known rules of pop music: make it fun (and, if you can, go big). Number 1 Angel, like the woman behind it, is up for a boomin' good time, and refuses to dance alone, as it chases highs, rolls with the homies, and engages in trysts and travails with boys who play too much or won't play at all. Beneath it all is a collection of glossy tracks that boom like an 808, nodding to hip-hop, R&B, house, and club music effortlessly, often within one track. It's Charli, baby, down for a good time, and curious to know if you wanna roll with her and paint the town red.

Say yeah.

DON'T LOOK BACK IN ANGER : THE ALBUMS, 2017.

14/lcd soundsystem/american dream

He took a little time off and took the band with him. And when he returned and got the gang back together, they did not put their name in lights or pull out the bullhorn and chose to, instead, place the marquee in the heavens, on cloud nine: LCD SOUNDSYSTEM presents their AMERICAN DREAM, aka one of 2017's greatest shows on earth, immaculately sequenced and brought to you in an album format. And there's something "spectacular! spectacular!" about this American Dream showcase. In the way it plays and presents itself with a confident urgency as if James and company never left. Up on cloud nine the party continues, as American Daydream plays and moves like a live album produced from a place that you HAVE to be at, while reminding you that you SHOULD be dancing. From the slow burning opener that sets the table for the ramshackle dance numbers that immediately follows it, revving up the engine as the band's new disco grooves and cathartic energy pushes and pulls you towards a higher ground til things eventually draw to a close, wordlessly, leaving you there to sweat it out and dry off as the album's closing minutes fade out like the end to a raucous encore or party you wish will never end. But they do. And when the music fades and the lights come up here, you are reminded that a little time away did nothing to diminish the technical prowess, wit, and emotional rescue that we've come to know and love (and expect) from LCD Soundsystem. So let's raise a toast to the bodies in here, and thank them for the triumphant return that is their American Dream.

DON'T LOOK BACK IN ANGER : THE ALBUMS, 2017.

15/lorde/melodrama

Melodrama is the broadcasting of booms and heartbeats that are forever racing. A collection of vivid super cuts of hard feelings and love as seen and experienced by Lorde. And us, as these feelings and scenarios are highly familiar and universal: all the glamour and the drama, and the reasons why we bother, and the highs and lows of young love, long nights out, and the mornings (and days and emotions) that follow. All the terror and the horror alongside all the thrills and initial rushes of attraction and sparks. Packaged here in anthems for the l-o-v-e-l-e-s-s generation set to trip-hop leaning compositions that burst like fireworks, from a 21 year old on fire looking for love and more from life wherever it can be found (if it can be found). Melodrama, like the game of love, is a rush of blood to the head, and a flush of warmth for the body and soul.

DON'T LOOK BACK IN ANGER : THE ALBUMS, 2017.

16/syd/fin

Ain't nothing you can tell her, she grown. Debut album, track one, she immediately makes this known. And over the course of Fin, the 25 year old Odd Future affiliate and member of The Internet luxuriates in rhythm & blues that is both grown and sexy. Syd's Fin is a smooth, sensual LP that floats like a butterfly when the destination of the bedroom is within reach, and stings like a bee whenever a reminder is needed that she is no ordinary woman, and this is no ordinary love. Like Aaliyah's One in a Million before it -an album Fin is close to in spirit- Syd's debut is an R&B album that exudes sexuality and confidence without overplaying it, and sits comfortably in R&B's past while moving the genre forward. It's a Top 5 R&B album that plays it cool, brought to you by a young woman who came from nothing to something, and got her own. Whip appeal for days.

17/spoon/hot thoughts

Spoon shoots straight. And for them, shooting straight equals spewing hot thoughts melting their minds, and letting them flourish throughout the melodies and rhythms accenting each track. Hot Thoughts. Present in that gospel breakdown in "WhisperI'lllistentohearit". Seen in the woozy instrumental blowout that is the album closer, "Us". Highlighted in Britt Daniel's ever present casual sex appeal, and let out through his ferocious snarl. You can catch them in the pulsating, rhythmic back beat of "Shotgun", and see them be allowed to shimmer yet again in the spaced out, wordless funk of "Can I Sit Next to You"'s closing minutes. Hot Thoughts, melting the mind, with a little bit of funk, and a whole lotta swagger. Once again. Album number nine. Go and let it burn.

DON'T LOOK BACK IN ANGER : THE ALBUMS, 2017.

18/st. vincent/masseduction

She can’t turn off what turns her on. And on album number five, that which entices & tickles her senses is also the light and guiding force behind the wonderfully quirky and angular new wave pop contained within, presented in technicolor. Annie's Masseduction steams and hisses in an eroticism that is both emotional and physical (and often times confrontational). It’s there in the album cover, and it's present in her naked honesty and vulnerability, found in every chorus and verse, reminding us of the deft storyteller and painter of images she is, and continues to be. It's sex, love, and rock & roll, buttressed by a vibrant canvas that bends pop & guitars to her whims and their spastic breaking points, with titillation for the masses, dressed up in leather and Annie Clark's love, pleading with you to get physical in order to get down and get free.

DON'T LOOK BACK IN ANGER : THE ALBUMS, 2017.

19/cherry glazerr/apocalipstick

They consider the title of "TRASH PEOPLE" to be a term of endearment, and they wear their underpants three days in a row. The room they inhabit smells like an ashtray, and the carpet smells like beer forever. They can't work a nine to five cause "art is love, and love is sloppy" and needs their undivided attention in order to come correct and clearly announce to the world who they are. And who they are is Cherry Glazerr, the Los Angeles quartet fronted by 19 year old riot grrl Clementine Creevy. And on their sophomore LP, this merry band of confident misfits walk proud in who they are, not quite pure, not quite dirty. With Apocalipstick, Cherry Glazerr gives us an incredible, bombastically wide 35 minute grunge leaning monster that toes the line between those two extremes of not quite dirty and not quite pure handily while sounding as if it was plucked directly from 1994. It boils the blood, black like a nuclear bomb, and lands like one, shredding & screaming, turned up to eleven. "The revolution is female" -and unafraid to push through and make waves- says Apocalipstick. "Here is your soundtrack."

DON'T LOOK BACK IN ANGER : THE ALBUMS, 2017.

20/kesha/rainbow

She exited the train as Kesha’s "Praying" soothed my ears, leaving the window seat vacant and now mine. I could have returned to my reading material, but chose to, instead, glance out the window at the magenta sunset lying atop the mountains as the song reached its emotional crescendo, finding myself moved, again. Another brief pause of life to just exist and be still and be present in the moment, again, as Kesha’s Rainbow plays. And I suspect she would approve (I hope she would approve). I suspect she would approve of me getting lost in these confident and majestic hymns for the hymn-less, and fiery, silly little honky-tonk love songs and positive life affirmations, and how they resonated with me continuously throughout the fall since the album was released. That I’ve found peace in that which she did: in her artistry, and in these songs. Her serene acoustic ditties, rave ups with Eagles of Death Metal and The Dap-Kings, and love songs about Godzilla. That I found a rainbow in her happiness and her art of letting go, again, and again, and again, latching on to her strength and peace of mind, connecting through sound, and connecting through this album. Her Rainbow. An album and emotional release she needed to make for herself, and one we needed to (and are fortunate to) hear.

DON'T LOOK BACK IN ANGER : THE ALBUMS, 2017.

21/vince staples/big fish theory

This joint right here is that gospel from a street disciple. Little over a half hour of Vince coming correct with the heat. That, "CLICK CLACK CLAP!" and that "BOOP BOP BAM!". Big Fish Theory is an album wide presentation of that fire and a declaration of what's good and what it is from a keen observer of the real. Big Fish Theory is poetry. Big Fish Theory is gangsta. Big Fish Theory is Hip-Hop unrestrained. Big Fish Theory is art. Like the man on the mount himself, the album is nuanced and multi-faceted, and "on a new level". It is "too cultured and too ghetto", from someone who commands your attention cause he (like we) is on now. And he's just getting started. He should have been dead broke, and he should have been chalked out, but it didn't happen, so press play, "get it cracking", "go stupid", and just, as he recommends, "lose yourself in the music".

DON'T LOOK BACK IN ANGER : THE ALBUMS, 2017.

22/thundercat/drunk

That cover. A mouth hidden, muffled, and yet you can feel, hear even, the words "it's like a jungle sometimes it makes me wonder how I keep from going under" as you watch that head keep itself (for the most part) above water. And over the course of an hour that's the game at play for our protagonist here: staying afloat while lifted and traversing through unsteady waters. Drunk is a funk laden odyssey from the 33 year old Los Angeles bassist out here doing the most while stuck in the clouds and going thru them changes out here in these streets. Taking its cues from the expansive tonal colors and unbridled possibilities of funk and jazz, Drunk is a spacey and often times woozy set that seeks peace as THUNDERCAT uses the tools at his disposal to find clarity, collect comfort, or ride off into space and on to the sun, the entire time never losing its cool veneer and funk laced sheen.

23/kehlani/sweetsexysavage

SweetSexySavage is the sound of one woman getting over. An album where Kehlani sets flames to her past and insecurities, and walks forward towards a more solid and sure footed future, Ms. Bassett with that compact vehicle style. Nowhere is this more evident than on the sensually boomin' album highlight "Piece of Mind" where, on the bridge with the vocals going up a register as if she is taking it to church, she lets this brand new day shine and come through. "Gotta get a little piece of mind. Gotta make sure that it feels just right. Gotta make sure that I make it last this time!..." And project it back outward towards us (and worthy potential suitors. No fuckboys though. Been there done that. Bought a t-shirt and burned that shit, too). SweetSexySavage is a reassertion of confidence that kills em with compassion all while playing it crazy sexy cool like a child of destiny.

24/palberta/bye bye berta

This year, few albums were as exciting and adventurous as this one right here. Palberta is Lily Konigsberg, Anina Ivry-Block, and Nina Ryser, and their Bye Bye Berta is noise rock at its finest: all bells, horns, and cowbells; shrieks, laughter, BASS. Twenty tiny compositions in twenty eight minutes, steeped in a free form, rip it up, turn it loose punk ethos (including a brilliant one minute bare bones take on the Bee Gees' "Stayin' Alive"). With Bye Bye Berta, Palberta gives us beautifully controlled chaos that is textured and fucking abrasive. A free space in album form that's a head trip, and a feast for the ears.

Track Six, "Leaving LA". An album highlight, and its centerpiece. A perfect encapsulation of Father John Misty the artist, Father John Misty the man, and Father John Misty's Pure Comedy. Over the course of 13 minutes (yes, you read that correctly) and the album in general, Father John gives himself an ample amount of space to hold a mirror to his world, our world, and our habits and contradictions; slowly processing that which is reflected back at him in order to fine tune himself and see things more clearly. It is a wordy affair, almost resembling a ramble in parts, that never loses sight of its narrative, or loosens its firm grip on your undivided attention. It's total entertainment forever that is present and grounded in the moment. "Another white guy in 2017 who takes himself so goddamn seriously", who "never learned to play guitar", and "always more preferred the speaking part". And speak he does, plainly, clearly; backed by a rapturously lush soundscape that exists on the same orchestral folk plain as Beck's sterling, contemplative opus, Sea Change. If each other is all we got, as he reminds us at the top, we are lucky to have Father John Misty and the thoughts and conversations that make up Pure Comedy, around.

"We hear a lot about the Big Three Sexualities — straight, bisexual and gay. Most of us assume that these three orientations encompass the universe of sexual identities. But there is a new kid on the block: The mostly straight male.

To the uninitiated, mostly straight may seem paradoxical. How can a man be mostly heterosexual? If you’re a young man, you might assume that either you’re straight or you’re not, meaning you’re likely gay and maybe bisexual. Yet the evidence suggests that more young men identify or describe themselves as mostly straight than identify as either bisexual or gay combined.

...The mostly straight man belongs to a growing trend of young men who are secure in their heterosexuality yet remain aware of their potential to experience far more. Perhaps he’s felt attracted to or fantasized about another guy to a slight degree or intermittently. He might or might not be comfortable with this seeming contradiction, a hetero guy who, despite his lust for women, rejects a straight label, a sexual category and a sexual description that feels foreign. He’d rather find another place on the sexual/romantic continuum, some location that fits him more comfortably.

He knows he’s not gay, but straight with a dash of gayness. But how much gayness? Not much — a relatively small percentage, say around 5% to 10%, of his sexual and romantic feelings. Strict rules don’t apply. These attractions are sexual, romantic or both and can be expressed in various ways, from erotic fantasies to actual behavior. Perhaps he’s made out or he wants to make out with a guy friend. He’s participated in all-male group masturbation or is willing to receive oral sex from an attractive guy he’s just met. But it’s unlikely that he has had penetrative sex with a guy, though he might be willing to if the right guy or circumstance appeared. He might have had an intense guy crush. But to fall passionately in love with a guy is too much, though he might have quite strong feelings and cuddle with a best friend.

He feels his same-sex sexuality internally more than he lives it externally. Perhaps if his culture were not so stigmatizing of same-sex sexuality he might be more inclined to express himself through tangible expressions of sex or romance — not frequently but occasionally.

He’s not transitioning toward identifying as bisexual or gay. He’s not a closeted gay man who fears being gay yet wants to keep a slight, perhaps secretive, gay side by dangling his potential for guy sex. He’s not saying, “I’m available for guys who want to have sex with a straight guy” while enjoying the privileges afforded to heterosexual men in our society. He’s not an equal opportunity bisexual in disguise trying to hold out hope for straightness, nor is he afraid to identify as bisexual because of societal stigma and prejudice. He is not a disgruntled straight man tired of sex with women, nor is he necessarily unhappy or frustrated with the availability of heterosexual sex. He may retreat from a full identification with heterosexuality, but rarely does he gravitate toward bisexuality, and almost never does he move toward homosexuality of any sort. Thus, he is a closer cousin to straight guys than to traditional bisexual guys.

...How do these values and practices play out in the future? Well, if we are prepared to accept mostly straight as a fourth sexual identity, we gain an increasingly nuanced understanding of sexual orientation — and its close cousin, romantic orientation. We won’t stop at four; no doubt we will soon recognize additional sexual identities — which might be yours."
