"I think there is a gay and secular fascism in this country that wants to impose its will on the rest of us, is prepared to use violence, to use harassment. I think it is prepared to use the government if it can get control of it. I think that it is a very dangerous threat to anybody who believes in traditional religion. And I think if you believe in historic Christianity, you have to confront the fact. And, frank -- for that matter, if you believe in the historic version of Islam or the historic version of Judaism, you have to confront the reality that these secular extremists are determined to impose on you acceptance of a series of values that are antithetical, they're the opposite, of what you're taught in Sunday school...I think -- I think when the left -- when the radicals lost the vote in California, they are determined to impose their will on this country no matter what the popular opinion, no matter what the law of the land."-Newt Gingrich

Will the 2008 G.O.P. go the way of the 1936 G.O.P., which didn’t reclaim the White House until 1952? Even factoring in the Democrats’ time-honored propensity for self-immolation, it’s not beyond reason. The Republicans are in serious denial. A few heretics excepted, they hope to blame all their woes on their unpopular president, the inept McCain campaign and their party’s latent greed for budget-busting earmarks.

The trouble is far more fundamental than that. The G.O.P. ran out of steam and ideas well before George W. Bush took office and Tom DeLay ran amok, and it is now more representative of 20th-century South Africa during apartheid than 21st-century America. The proof is in the vanilla pudding. When David Letterman said that the 10 G.O.P. presidential candidates at an early debate looked like “guys waiting to tee off at a restricted country club,” he was the first to correctly call the election.

On Nov. 4, that’s roughly the sole constituency that remained loyal to the party — minus its wealthiest slice, a previously solid G.O.P. stronghold that turned blue this year (in a whopping swing of 34 percentage points). The Republicans lost every region of the country by double digits except the South, which they won by less than double digits (9 points). They took the South only because McCain, who ran roughly even with Obama among whites in every other region, won Southern whites by 38 percentage points.

Those occasional counties that tilted more Republican in 2008 tended to be not only the least diverse, but also the most rural, least educated and slowest-growing in population. McCain-Palin did score a landslide among white evangelical Christians, though even in that demographic Obama shaved the G.O.P. margin by seven percentage points from 2004.

The Republicans did this to themselves, yet a convenient amnesia can be found in conservatives’ post-Election Day soul searching. There’s endless hand-wringing about Bush and McCain blunders and Abramoff-Stevens corruption, but there’s barely any mention of the nasty cultural brawls that defined the G.O.P. campaign narrative this year as the party clung bitterly once more to its 40-year-old “Southern strategy.”

"In his speech at the Democratic convention four years ago, Barack Obama memorably challenged the myth that holding a book is “acting white.” Now that he’s been elected president, he might actually be able to do something about it.

Black students are too often scorned by their peers as “thinking they’re white” for making A’s, and many let their grades slip in order to have black friends. Some educators and academics dismiss it as an unimportant thing to focus on when addressing black-student achievement. Some sociologists have even claimed that the whole “acting white” notion is a myth by showing that black students who make good grades also say that they are popular. But as Harvard economist Roland Fryer puts it, “Asking teenagers whether they’re popular is like asking them if they’re having sex.” Fryer’s work has shown that black students do in fact have fewer social connections the higher their grades, to a much greater extent than white students..."

Life got you down? Stuck in a rut because of the Economy? Currently unemployed, qualified, and hungry for the next big thing? Well I, and by I I mean Barack Obama, may have a job for you.

    The Wall Street Journal reports:

"President-elect Barack Obama will be the country's next commander-in-chief. He could also be your next boss.

At the start of every new president's term, roughly 7,000 government jobs open up nationwide and abroad. Some are reserved for top officials and corporate leaders, but the majority of the positions are typically up for grabs.

The jobs, referred to as politically appointed or noncareer positions, span all levels and are in a range of fields, such as accounting, communications, law, engineering, technology, social services and education. They pay annual salaries ranging from $30,000 for low-level positions to $175,000 for the most senior jobs, plus health care and other benefits. Political experience isn't a prerequisite, nor is having campaigned for the incoming president.

There is a catch: The positions last only for the duration of the president's tenure.

If your interest is still piqued, now is the time to start your search. On Wednesday, the U.S. government announced which positions will become available and where they'll be located, in a print publication called the Plum Book. You can find a free online version at gpoaccess.gov. The positions are projected to be filled throughout the first year of the new administration, and will range from jobs such as director of accounting services for the Department of Defense to deputy manager of cleanup for the Department of Energy.

You can fill out a general application online now at change.gov, a site that offers news and events about the set-up of the Obama administration. You'll receive instructions via email at a later date on how to provide details about specific jobs that interest you."

But this is where it's at:

Nate Silver over at 538.com reports:

"...the notion that Prop 8 passed because of the Obama turnout surge is silly. Exit polls suggest that first-time voters -- the vast majority of whom were driven to turn out by Obama (he won 83 percent [!] of their votes) -- voted against Prop 8 by a 62-38 margin. More experienced voters voted for the measure 56-44, however, providing for its passage.

Now, it's true that if new voters had voted against Prop 8 at the same rates that they voted for Obama, the measure probably would have failed. But that does not mean that the new voters were harmful on balance -- they were helpful on balance. If California's electorate had been the same as it was in 2004, Prop 8 would have passed by a wider margin.

Furthermore, it would be premature to say that new Latino and black voters were responsible for Prop 8's passage. Latinos aged 18-29 (not strictly the same as 'new' voters, but the closest available proxy) voted against Prop 8 by a 59-41 margin. These figures are not available for young black voters, but it would surprise me if their votes weren't fairly close to the 50-50 mark.

At the end of the day, Prop 8's passage was more a generational matter than a racial one. If nobody over the age of 65 had voted, Prop 8 would have failed by a point or two. It appears that the generational splits may be larger within minority communities than among whites, although the data on this is sketchy..."

So it will be telling if Mr. McCain stands up for his partner and says how offended he has been by what some of his staffers have done to her...We are asked to believe that Mrs. Palin was not ready for a national campaign. On what evidence from any part of this election are we to conclude that anyone on the McCain campaign team was ready for a national campaign?...Let's remember too that the only time Mr. McCain surged ahead -- in the polls, in the volunteers, in the mojo -- was when he picked Mrs. Palin. Before that he and his staff had been flying solo, and they were losing. When the contest returned to the top of the ticket, as presidential campaigns inevitably do, Mr. McCain and his team drove their lead into the ground..."

The now-infamous moment occurred aboard the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Abraham Lincoln only a month after U.S. troops in Iraq were deployed.

"They had a sign that said 'Mission Accomplished.' It was a sign aimed at the sailors on the ship but it conveyed a broader knowledge. To some it said well Bush thinks the war in Iraq is over when I didn't think that but nonetheless it conveyed the wrong message," he said.

Sarah Palin is not going anywhere...More important, though, than Palin's own self-redemption crusade is the national media's continued interest in her. And who can blame them? Like Barack Obama, Palin is a bundle of contradictions and seeming non sequiturs -- a bundle that represents the tensions in play in the lives of many Americans. In Obama, the tensions of race, culture and the structure of the modern, blended family were all brought into play. In Palin, as Katha Pollitt has sagely written, is the irony of the ambitious and talented woman who embraces a conservative, truly right-wing, worldview. As Lauer interviewed her in her Wasilla kitchen, it may have been the governor herself who made the casserole, but her hunky, blue-collar husband held the baby with utter comfort, patting him nonchalantly as if this is something he does every day (because it is)..."

"...this was a good Democratic year, but it is still a center-right country. Conservatives and the Republican Party will have a real chance for a comeback — unless the skills of the new president turn what was primarily an anti-Bush vote into the basis for a new liberal governing era.

Those were my thoughts when, a few minutes into his victory speech, just after midnight, Obama told his daughters, “And you have earned the new puppy that’s coming with us to the new White House.”

    I gulped.

Not out of my deep affection for dogs, fond of them though I am. But because while we’ve all known that Obama is a very skillful politician, he hasn’t until now been a particularly empathetic one. Competence plus warmth is a pretty potent combination. Suddenly visions of the two great modern realigning presidents — Franklin Roosevelt (with his Scottish terrier Fala) and Ronald Reagan (with his Cavalier King Charles spaniel Rex) — flashed before my eyes. Maybe a realignment could be coming.

Obama was, naturally, asked about the promised-but-not-yet-purchased puppy at his press conference Friday. (If one were being churlish, one might say that it was typical of a liberal to promise the dog before delivering it. A results-oriented conservative would simply have shown up with the puppy without the advance hype.)

Obama commented wryly that the canine question had “generated more interest on our Web site than just about anything.” He continued:

“We have two criteria that have to be reconciled. One is that Malia is allergic, so it has to be hypoallergenic. There are a number of breeds that are hypoallergenic. On the other hand, our preference would be to get a shelter dog, but, obviously, a lot of shelter dogs are mutts like me. So — so whether we’re going to be able to balance those two things, I think, is a pressing issue on the Obama household.”

Here, in a few sentences, Obama did the following: He deepened his bond with every dog lover in America. He identified with every household that’s tried to figure out what kind of dog to get. He touched every parent with a kid allergic to pets. He showed compassion by preferring a dog from a shelter. And he demonstrated a dry and slightly politically incorrect wit by commenting that “a lot of shelter dogs are mutts like me.”

Not bad. It could be a tough four or eight years for conservatives."

"Congratulations to President-elect Barack Obama. As a conservative who has been fearful of an Obama victory for the last several months, I'm more than a little surprised at how calm I am with the dreaded result and how stress-free it is to offer genuine felicitations for the historic win.

Part of my tranquil demeanor comes because of the historic significance of the outcome. Our nation just elected an African-American as our next president of the United States. No matter party or ideology, that color-blind advancement in our electoral process has to make all of us proud.

Another reason for my serenity comes by way of my background. I grew up in abject poverty and was homeless a number of times as a child. By the time I was 17 years old, I had moved 34 times with each move coming because of a forced and often ugly eviction.

I mention that because a number of those evictions deposited me in poor, majority black neighborhoods and schools. I've talked and written about it often in the past, but I honestly look back upon those dysfunctional and traumatic years as more of a gift than a burden. I say that because as a white child, poverty and the random destination of those moves brought me face to face with an enduring truth: my young black friends were no different than me. They were just other forgotten and faceless poor children who were desperately trying to escape an existence forced upon them by the accident of birth. Color made no difference to any of us."

HE: Yeah, they slow things down with this one and get soulful. [Folds hand into a fist, closes eyes, and tilts head towards the sky] "You know that I could USE SOMEBODDDAY!"
HIM: Love that song. Hell, I could listen to the lead singer sing the phone book and be alright.

    WOW WOW WOW WOW!

FILE UNDER: Y'ALL KNOW WHAT THIS IS!

    Promise of a New Day!

You Heard it hear first: Black people will be floating on cloud nine/acting a fool all week. Parties will be off the chain Thurs-Sun of this week. TRUST.

    Good ass job(?).

    FIRST UP: The Words

How to get stuck in a dead-end job when I can rap
When I call my bill collectors they ain't tryin to hear that
Matter fact they askin Dexter when I plan the payback
On that long line of credit that they lent me way back
Way back, way back, at the turn of the century
The notice they sent to me is sayin essentially
If I don't pay that balance off along with a extra fee
    Penitentiary or criminal charges
Probably soon to follow if you dare disregard this
And that got me nauseous, and feelin precautious
Cause the fruits of my labor, ain't barin no harvest
At least as a artist cause AT LEAST as a artist
You become whoever when your time get the hardest
But who you 'sposed to call when they all think you garbage
And figured that you washed up, damn they so heartless
Cause when I called the office they act stiffer than starches

And this just ain't where I'm 'sposed to be
This just ain't where I'm 'sposed to be
This just ain't where I'm 'sposed to be
This just ain't where I'm 'sposed to be
Cause this just ain't where I'm 'sposed to be
This just ain't where I'm 'sposed to be
This just ain't where I'm 'sposed to be
This just ain't, this just ain't

Man... I gotta make my next move my best move
Cause there ain't no food in the fridge SON WHAT YOU DOIN~? !
C'mon son, we can't be, son we can't be out there like that
The hold ain't even tight no more, no more
Son WHAT'S REALLY GOOD~! Ahh... man

    Now I'm in a situation that I can't pacify
So I'm lookin through the papers skimmin through the classifieds
When I see an opportunity that can't pass me by
That I can get the job if I give this class a try
Put my pride to the side, go get a 9 to 5
Cause livin check to check's the only way that I survive
But yo they sorta lied cause the lead's certified
It take more than shirts and ties for the course that they provide
But the course they would provide, a means of employment
Which is basically a job that I'll soon be annoyed with
So this unemployment is now subject to change
Cause I'm on these interviews and I'm runnin my game
And I'm bein interviewed by my government name
And I'm Ollie out the crew that we one and the same
So for now I'm out the game and far away from recordin
Cause they left a message sayin that I start Monday mornin

Damn. I need to stop sleepin' on Consequence...

P.S. Hmm. Consequence and Kanye are homies right? Cause the swag, flow, and delivery was very Kanye West like. Or is it that Kanye's swag, flow, and delivery is very Consequence like?

Maybe it's because it's Election Day. Maybe I need to get my ass back inside a church at some point. Whatever the reason, when I woke up this morning [and on the walk back to work post lunch] this song presented below in music video form, was in my head. Hell, I even sang the hook at the end with the choir out loud before realizing I was in public, walking down a street sans iPod, Sony Discman, or a giant BoomBox perched on my shoulders. Not a good look son. Not a good look at all. [Though walking down a street in business casual clothes while carrying a giant boombox on my shoulders that's bumping the Space Jam sdrtk is probably an even worse look]

Wow, that was something. You'll have to excuse me, I forgot how "This is our Country!" the music video is in certain parts. It's been a minute.

    Imagine.

    Bout it! Bout it!

Every now and then I rock this abstract symbol of change dog tag around my neck in support of Barack Obama's campaign. Said necklace was given to me upon my return from St. Louis over Labor Day Weekend, a return that coincided with the end of the 2008 Democratic National Convention in Denver, Colorado. A convention attended by the two ladies you see presented above, who I am lucky enough to know, and have received a few post convention goodies from upon my return. [Including that "abstract symbol of change" dog tag necklace.]

You see, more times than not, I am reminded of how small this world can be. I have two roommates from Santa Cruz. One of the two informed us all of how we would have two houseguests for the weekend, needing a place to hang and crash on during their stop in Los Angeles on this, their 'Roadtrip to the DNC!' Little did I know, that these two girls would be two of the most enthusiastic, kind-hearted, and generous grass roots campaigners I would come to meet and read about throughout this long, arduous road to the White House. Getting attention as two attractive young women in a perfectly and fully stickered Obama Volvo [that took damn near four hrs to cover, precisely] is not hard, but it's easy to discount, and that's the last thing one should do when evaluating the time, energy, and effort these two put into this election season. From getting the word out by talking face to face and person to person to offering up some fine stenciled t-shirts with only the finest of fine bottles of Spray Paint as a means of fundraising, these two walked the walk and talked the talk. And as the smoke clears and this election season draws to a close, it sure feels good to sit back, relax, and reflect on the good times and causes for celebration, right?

    No, look ahead...

"...But if he [McCain] doesn’t [win], the coulda-shoulda-wouldas will be withering and ceaseless, with Palin’s role in the defeat the subject of a furious interpretive battle between her detractors and defenders.

The contours of that battle and its outcome will be of more than academic interest. They will be central to the coming struggle for the soul of the Republican Party and to Palin’s future. Here in deep-blue Gotham, many people assume that her destiny is sealed: a one-way ticket back to Wasilla. But the truth is that Palin is likely to be a significant player on the national stage for years to come. As a galvanizing, maybe polarizing, figure in the conservative movement. As a folk hero on the talk-radio–Fox News right. And possibly, possibly, as the GOP front-runner in 2012.

That Palin in the final days of the campaign was already looking toward the next election cycle was glaringly evident—not least in some quarters inside McCain-land, where it caused no small degree of consternation. Her public (via Bill Kristol) challenging of McCain for not bringing up Barack Obama’s association with Jeremiah Wright, her objection to the campaign’s withdrawal from Michigan, her insistence on giving policy speeches during the home stretch, her loud and off-message effort to defend herself regarding her $150,000 wardrobe splurge: All of it seemed focused more on playing to the base or repairing her reputation than on helping McCain to win.

For a candidate whose public image has taken the battering that Palin’s has in the past two months, focusing on the post-election horizon seems both natural and drenched in chutzpah. But Palin surely knows that many prominent figures in the conservative movement—from Morton Blackwell to Brent Bozell—see in her the potential to emerge in time as a next-generation, XX-chromosome Ronald Reagan. Indeed, on November 5, an assemblage of the movement’s leaders will take place at a private weekend home in rural Virginia to begin discussing a way forward for the GOP in the age of Obama (if he wins, that is), with Palin’s role high on the agenda."

This Grand Old Panic segment taken from The Rachel Maddow show in Mid-October highlighted some of the many reasons why I adore this woman and her fine, fine program. She's witty, warm, educated, informed, and most importantly, respectful and tolerant of other's opinions, even if they differ from her own. She truly deserves any and all [positive] attention that comes her way!

"...we hope for a McCain-Palin victory, for the sake of the country. And also for the pleasure of seeing the dejection of the mainstream media, the incredulity of the leftwing triumphalists, and the humiliation of the pathetically opportunistic "conservatives" who've been desperately clambering on board the Obama juggernaut. We're proud to stay off that juggernaut. We're proud, in our modest way, to stand with John McCain and Sarah Palin against it.

An Obama-Biden administration--working with a Democratic Congress--would mean a more debilitating nanny state at home and a weaker nation facing our enemies abroad. We, of course, have confidence that the nation would survive such an interlude, and we would even hope that a President Obama might adjust course from the path he's advertised, especially in foreign policy. But the risk of real damage is great, especially when compared with the prospect of a tough-minded center-right McCain-Palin administration that could lead the country sensibly through these difficult times..."
