    11. Arctic Monkeys-Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not

When you flip through the booklet for the Arctic Monkey's debut you aren't hit with the typical liner notes and thank yous to management and A&R people. Instead you are hit with a pictorial narrative of young twentysomethings out and about in London town, spillng out of taxi cabs, puffing on cigarettes, downing alcohol, and reveling in the adolescent euphoria of their youth. It is a fiiting set of images for a band who music and showmanship bristles at the seams with youth, energy, confidence, and attitude. There's a reason why the British press couldn't get enough of these lads. Less forced and more manic than say American counterparts Panic! at the Disco or Fall Out Boy, the Arctic Monkeys talk shit, bang the gong, and revel in sin without a care in the world. One would be wise to put on his or her dancing shoes and join in on the fun.
KEY TRACKS: I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor/Riot Van/A Certain Romance

    10. Dirty Sanchez-Dirty Sanchez

A hunk, a dude who looks like a lady, and a quiet man with one of those over the shoulder keyboard guitars walk into a bar. The crowd goes silent. Even the jukebox comes to a complete stop as all eyes are fixated on the door. The trio walk slowly from the door to the stage. DJ Barabeau gets behind his boards, Mario cracks his neck, and Jackie Beat grabs the mic. The music starts. "Suck it/suck it/get it wet and fuck it/go somewhere and hide it/somewhere dark in private." " Yeah/Lick it/lick it/get it wet and stick it/go somewhere and hide it/somewhere dark and private." It's on now. And there's no turning back. Sometimes music takes itself too seriously, even electro, but with a band like Dirty Sanchez, cheese, smut, and irony looks good and they wear it well. You'll be hard pressed to find another cd that applauds fucking on the dancefloor while at the same time showing no love for youth and beauty. Get pass the title. Get pass the fact that many of the lead vocals are provided by a man in drag [and done quite well I must add] and shake that ass.

Grandmaster Melle Mel provides an awesome analysis of the 50 Cent vs. Oprah debate on his myspace blog. Check it out!:

    "…Hip-Hop.

Once again, we the true Hip-Hop nation have lost another round in the battle of "True Hip-Hop" vs. "The Modern Day Hip-Hop Image". Let me first say this, I, like most inner city niggaz, can not and have not related to Oprah in many years. This makes me the last person to say that I am a fan of her show. So, with that thought in mind, I have nothing to lose or gain by watching or not watching Oprah. But, the truth is that Oprah has done more for the positive image of black people (black women in particular) than anyone we know. For twenty plus fucking years she's been out there doing her thing and never once had, or asked for, the support of any artist, Hip-Hop or otherwise. Like her or hate her, she's just as black as me, you, Kunta Kinte or any other nigga who came out of Africa. Now, all of the sudden these rap niggaz, who already sell more records than Jesus (to 90% white people) want to use The Oprah Winfrey Show to promote that bullshit that they pass off as Hip-Hop.

Let's keep it real. 50 Cent sells a lot of records. He also writes some of the greatest hooks I've ever heard. For a few years he's been as hot as shit on the street and otherwise. But the reality is, 50 Cent sells dope. His image and everything he stands for says he's a dope dealing thug, and he wouldn't have it any other way. Plain and simple. So for him, Ludacris, Ice Cube or any other mother-fucker in the business who thinks that putting Oprah on blast, and questioning her STREET CREDIBILITY, clearly shows that we as a people have lost our fucking minds. What do you think a person that has over one billion dollars should do? Hang out with Shaquita and them and baby-sit her four kids in the projects? Or better yet, put a couple of million out on the street and double her money on the re-up? Or better yet, I got it, her and Martha Stewart can get together and rob a liquor store at gun point? Would you mother-fuckers rather see her do some stupid shit like that?

The bottom line is, when you have Oprah money, you do what you want to do. When I am in the streets of New York City, and I see the Vitamin Water adds on the buses, with pictures of 50 reading the newspaper and holding a poodle, not a pit-bull, but a fucking poodle, do I think 50 sold out? Noooooooo. I think he's trying to sell Vitamin Water. To who? Anybody that would buy it. So he can do what? Hang out in the projects with Ray Ray drinking beer and holding his balls? Noooooooo. He's trying to get Oprah money, so he can do anything he wants to do, just like Oprah. Let's not get the game twisted. He's trying to force Oprah's hand to make Oprah help him promote some shit that she, and for that matter I, don't give a fuck about. 50 Cent and Oprah live in two separate worlds. It should stay that way. They think two separate ways. And, it should stay that way. So for the media and grimey niggaz to portray Oprah as a person who doesn't like Hip-Hop because she doesn't like negative nigga shit, has to be a low point in Niggadom.

Oprah represents, call it sell out or not, a person who has evolved and elevated herself to the highest point of society's elite. And, 50 Cent, call it what you want to call it, hell of an artist, great business man, but bottom line, it might hurt to hear it, is a dope dealing nigga, who if he wore Oprah's shoes, would do the same thing Oprah does. And, so would me or you. So, in parting, if Oprah's selling out, let her. 'Cause Oprah, one day, could run for President, and 50 Cent, could run from the cops.

    Big ups Beyonce!

For making Entertainment Weekly's Entertainers of the year list. It should be no surprise to anyone out there that I was in love with Beyonce this fall, thanks in large part to her stunning [and one of my top ten records of the year]album B'Day. I can't wait to see this in concert. Make no doubt about it.

    Quote of the Night!

"The real Kevin Federline never backs down from a challenge. Make all your jokes, because New Year's Day I'm the one who is going to be laughing. Oh yeah, Cena, my name is not K-Fed, it's Kevin Federline, bitch, and I want some and I'm gonna get some."

    Headline of the Night!

  • The Superficial: Kevin Federline to fake wrestle John Cena
  • [I be saying] NO! NO! NO! NO! NO!

  • Seriously fellas.
  • Make it stop!

[I be saying] NO! NO! NO! NO! NO!

When you be saying YES! YES! YES! YES! YES!

You ever walk down a street [or dance in a club] and see a group of young dudes and for some reason the scrawny one with the braids and his pants down low always feels the need to carry himself about town with no shirt on cause he can. That's what came to mind when I saw these pics of Omarion performing on 106 & Park.

Old school funk for the true funk soldiers!

I was riding home the other day thumbing through the IPod looking for something to play when all of a sudden I decided to give Interpol's Turn on the Bright Lights a spin. It's been a long time and I will always, always, always hold a special place in my heart for Obstacle 1. It's thanks to that song that I became a newfound fan. But on that ride home, a new song came and stole my heart via the heaphones: NYC. I forgot how grand, sweeping, and majestic this song is. For those four minutes and nineteen seconds I wished I was riding on the porno like subways, aching to turn on the bright lights.

    13. The Black Keys-Magic Potion

Just two dope boys with some drums and riffs holed up in a basement churning out some hits. For their fourth record vocalist/guitarist Dan Auerbach and drummer Patrick Carney stick to the formula without sounding stale. Opener Just Got To Be plugs in and hammers away, replicating the sound of a late night blues band by the bayou, setting the mood and tone for another down home blues rocking affair. Heavy or downtempo, the boys bring it and soak it all in genuine honky tonk emotion and blues. For 47 minutes Auerbach and Carney stick to that formula, holding on to the age old mantra of if ain't broke don't fix it. And over the course of these eleven songs don't a damn thing sound broke.
KEY TRACKS: Just Got To Be/You're The One/Strange Desire

    12. The Presets-Beams

Something strange happens when you play track two on this long player. The synths kick in like a rallying cry and one by one the beat picks up. Your body starts to shake a little bit and your head starts to bob. And by the time the bridge kicks in and the hand claps get going, you're already gone and lost control. I think it's what the cool kids call dancing. With Beams, Sydney based duo The Presets keep their intentions locked soley on one place: the dancefloor. The mystique, the sex appeal, the sweat inducing melodies, it does something to the duo, it lures them in, it excites them, it makes them wanna lose control for long durations of time. Beams is no different. It's an excercise in electro rock get down, as vital to one's health as a proper diet or a daily dose of vitamins.

    Listen

So I could not stand this song at all when I copped B'Day. To me it felt sloppily tacked on to what is otherwise a tight, cohesive, and damn fine album. [the same goes for Check On It. Great track. Bad tack.] And then I saw Dreamgirls last Saturday and now the song is tolerable and has gotten a few spins here and there. Kudos also to Beyonce for going back to the drawing board and crafting up an alternate version of Listen. This video works and looks better than video # 1. Check it out.

I can hear myself, but I can't feel myself

So Fallout Boy released a new video for This Aint a Scene, It's an Arms Race, the first single from their upcoming album Infinity On High. It kind of reminds me of
  • this video
  • except this one adds pop locking, 40's, and what appears to be, in the opening, the track's "producer" and his entourage. Or who knows, they could be members of Fallout Boy's entourage.
