on cocoa sugar the three scottish gentlemen who make up young fathers have one goal in mind: “take em to church!”. and over the course of this album’s run time, the fellas work towards this goal with a fierce urgency. it’s there in each and every vocal performance, pushed to the front of the mix so that these rousing proclamations are heard clearly, and felt. it’s there in the gospel chorus at the end of album opener "see how:"; the entirety of "fee fi"; the holy wails that fill up "lord" ; that chorus on "holy ghost" (“JESUS CHRIST!”); the propulsive ferocity of album highlight "wow"; and  within every boom boom pow of the tribal like rhythms that are laced atop the rhythm & blues machinations that adorn this avant garde hip hop set. they say a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down. with cocoa sugar, a spoonful weighs a ton and gives you a release that you didn't know you were in need of.

pulling up in that new toy, wrist shining and waving (at who, boy? yeah, YOU BOY!), it’s push. king push. "mr. too rare amongst all of this pink hair". the trapper turn rapper morphing into a puff like figure right before our very eyes with that finesse and his daytona. like a walmart, it’s your one stop shop for (that fire and that heat and) crisp rap game excellence that's cinematic in scope with points to be made and grievances to address (all while riding around shining); not here to fuck around, chase some charts or go out of its way to please you. not in daytona, as it is made known early on: "this ain't a game or phase cause all that shit fades/this lifestyle's forever when you're made..." and after spending just under 25 minutes across these blistering seven tracks with little to no fade outs and ye back at it choppin it up in the studio by his side, we believe him. he doesn't need a globe to show you the world is ours, not when he has these beats, that presence, and these bars keeping his daytona afloat. get with the program, stay woke, or get out.

at numerous points throughout bottle it in, the car wheels hit the gravel of an open road that seems limitless. and as the music plays, and the top comes down with you in the passenger, you quickly realize that if they did go on forever, he'd have no problem with that. wouldn't break his bones over it. such is the essence of kurt vile and his eighth collection of sun drenched open road reflections on love and life and shooting the breeze. a master of loopy, devil may care honky tonk, bottle it in is kurt in the zone with his hands on the wheel and time on his side, compelling you to put your feet on the dash and enjoy the view.
