a moment of clarity.

words.

"...The monster is up and walking, and it’s showing no desire at all to lay back down on the table for further tinkering. It’s up to Johnson and Nigel Farage to deal with the mess they’ve created, and their ability to do so is questionable, to say the very least — history has shown that when demagogues do manage to take power, they generally have no fucking idea what they are doing.

Of course, the Tories know this as well as anyone, which makes David Cameron’s decision to stake the future of his country for short-term political gain even more cynical and ill-conceived. And, indeed, ill-conceived is the word here, because the result of the referendum also demonstrates another depressing modern trend, one that’s manifested over the last 50 years everywhere from the hills of Afghanistan to the halls of Washington: a monster that the right has created has come back to bite it in the ass.

...It’ll be interesting to see what happens now that that particular strawman has been so comprehensively immolated. Perhaps the people of Britain will come to realize that their problem isn’t one of sovereignty and racial purity; it’s one of economics. The Brexit campaign has played on the fears of the disenfranchised working class, fears that are driven by declining employment, stagnant wages, and all the other first-world hallmarks of post-industrial, post-globalization decline. These problems are very real, but they’re not the fault of immigrants; they’re the creation of capitalism.

...Sadly, Britain just voted to be the example that the rest of the world needs: an example of why listening to the populist, anti-immigrant sentiment of the far right is a terrible idea, both morally AND pragmatically. Hopefully it’s an example that the USA will heed, because the fears that drove the Brexit are the same that are driving the supporters of Donald Trump in the USA; on both sides of the Atlantic, bad-haired buffoons who’ve enjoyed huge personal benefits from their membership of the 1% are exploiting the fears of the 99% for personal political capital. In the UK, the results have already been disastrous. Here in the USA, we still have a chance to pull back from the brink."

"...I also hope that Mr. Trump’s very bad week means something else. To return to the media’s role: Many of our assumptions about how people will react are, perhaps, outdated. We often think we know what “real Americans” are going to think. But I say we need to rethink our idea of who real Americans are. They aren’t just Trump supporters. Forty-nine of them were murdered in Orlando. It behooves us all to remember that."

words.

"The rise of Donald Trump is sort of a symptom of the fact that America hasn't ever dealt with whiteness. Overt racism is something that is very much in the forefront—[but] in that discourse, we're pointing to people of color, and we don't actually point to whiteness and the experience of being white in America.

What Donald Trump represents to me is a sickness that we haven't dealt with: the legacy of slavery and Jim Crow and all the other dumb shit that continues to exist. It hasn't been addressed in a very public and [on a] large grand scale kind of way. Also, it pulls up into question whiteness on a larger, global level. That population that Trump is resonating with [in the U.S.] is a population that not only exists here—it exists throughout the whole world. We have not dealt with racism on a global scale; we have not dealt with white privilege. White privilege is a term that needs to be used by a lot of people in this world, and it's not used by anyone. I think it's asking the question to white people, ‘Are you with us? Or are you not with us?’..."

saturday love.

He approached Sunset Beer Company feeling pretty boss and confident after running into Earl Sweatshirt a few steps back. Well, not run into, more like "looked up and around while walking down the street and happened to lock eyes with a random black dude smoking a cigarette while sitting on a tiny box who just happened to be Earl Sweatshirt when he looked right", okay.

Life of Pablo was playing, deep in one of his favorite blocks (pt. 2 onwards was in full swing), the sun was out, as were his guns, and liquor purchases were forthcoming. Another gorgeous Saturday in Los Angeles and Echo Park, where Bernie Sanders was making rounds at the lake a few steps or two southward to his right. Yes, even Bernie was feeling the So Cal sunshine and love.

She, too. A member of a bright entourage of peers the New York Times would have loved to photograph and attach to a new thinkpiece on brunch in Los Angeles or Millennials who have discovered walking in Los Angeles while gentrifying, or something. All hip, but casual. Cooler than you, perhaps, but approachable.

And approach she did. He tries and tried to not locate and stare too hard at any of the attractive males in the bunch for a quick game of spot or pull out your gay while cruising these streets. And he made sure he didn't let himself get locked into any blush inducing or misleading smiles with the ladies in the bunch.

Then he noticed the group slowing as the liquor oasis drew closer, a parking lot away. And then they stopped. And she stood in his path. She didn't remove her aviator ray bans, identical to the ones he wouldn't remove as well, but he could see that she was doing that thing where she had recognized someone she knew, wanted to shout a -INSERT HIS NAME HERE- & reminisce real quick. He could see it in her body language. Had been here before. We all have. And he too, ray bans still on, worked in those few seconds to scan her face and look her up and down politely, waiting for his brain to connect a name or memory to her face.

But this moment would never come, for they did not know each other, no. She stopped him merely to ask him for a hug. And he obliged. And she told him that she just wanted him to know that he is awesome. And to keep doing him.

He smiled. He blushed. He told them all to enjoy their Saturday, as they all went their separate ways, warmed by the friendly interaction, that sunshine, and the little moments/things/and connections that warm our hearts and make us smile, ‪#‎upinthesestreets‬.
