WORDS.

"...lobbyists have become a semi-permanent class with ever-expanding reach – they write legislation, they kill legislation. They have usurped many of the political functions that once belonged to elected officials, in part by adapting to new political ecologies faster than those who seek to counter their influence.

Insofar as they are protecting the status quo, lobbyists insulate calcified interest groups from challenge. They put up roadblocks that become ever-higher barriers to innovation. At a time when sectors of the economy ranging from health care to education to manufacturing are under more or less permanent siege, the tentacles of the lobbying community are choking off open exchange between officeholders and the voters they represent. They have created and now maintain a stifling stasis. It is hard to see how this ends well."

THE NEW YORK TIMES: Kill Bill

WORDS.

"Today, Senator McConnell defended the status quo of gridlock and obstruction in Washington, saying ‘there is no real problem here.’ I could not disagree more. Senator McConnell may choose to ignore it, but the problem of gridlock in Washington is real and it needs to be fixed.

Presidents — be they Republican or Democratic — deserve to have the people working for them that they choose. The Senate’s role is to advise and consent. But Republicans have corrupted the Founders’ intent, creating an unreasonable and unworkable standard whereby the weakest of rationales is often cited as sufficient basis for blocking major nominees. Due to Republican obstruction, the de facto threshold for too many nominees to be confirmed has risen from a simple majority to a supermajority of 60 votes. On judicial nominees, Republicans’ obstruction is equally unprecedented…There is no reason to delay qualified nominees for so long except delay itself, and it is little wonder we have a judicial vacancy crisis in this country.

Despite the agreement we reached in January, Republican obstruction on nominees continues unabated. I want to make the Senate work again – that is my commitment." - Harry Reid

Random Access Memories played for the 1st time last night in my atmosphere. It started strong. Lost me in the middle. Felt a little repetitive. Made my Uncle two step during his brief kitchen interlude as Giorgio by Moroder played. Mostly, like that first meeting with JT's Suit & Tie, I found myself wondering, "Where's the pulse? Why aren't I sweating? This, this is... nice?.. Pleasant? A great homage, but it just doesn't feel, 'alive'." In other words, I let it give me a sad face (like it has hilariously given many of us it seems).

This morning I came back to it.

And I let it play.

This time around, Within hit like it should. This time around Touch was less silly and actually kind of majestic towards the end. This time around Get Lucky finally landed for me and I almost played it back when it ended. This time around I realized this album is meant to be played from the top to the bottom, and that is how I will largely come to enjoy it from here on out. Cause after this morning's stream I realized more than anything that you know what, I like this album. Like, really like this album. It grooves, it knocks, it makes me want to immerse myself and revel in nothing but great two stepping ass shaking beats of dance/electro/disco/funk music's present and past (As I did this morning, when I found myself going from Daft Punk to Van She to Hot Chip to Charli XCX to !!! to Daft Punk again).

Words.

"...I know, I know: This “confluence” of “scandals” spells “trouble” for the Obama administration. Well, sure, this has been hell week for the president. But what spells trouble for our country is our apparent eagerness to avoid debate about discrete problems by sacrificing the particulars and the facts to the idol of political narrative. It’s a false god."

-INTERLUDE-

A Moment of Clarity.

WORDS.

"I must take issue with the Politico story that suggests President Obama has lost Washington. Washington is not monolithic. It is composed of many groups, power centers, tribes and stakeholders. They almost never move in unison, either for or against a president. Also, Obama hasn’t lost Washington because Republicans certainly haven’t won anything. The president is down, but I wouldn’t characterize Republicans as being up. When the president hits a pothole, even one that rattles his frame, it’s not wise for anyone to assume Obama’s presidency is over. A lot of presidential authority is self-renewing if the White House can get out of its own way and let it happen..."

A Moment of Clarity.

WORDS.

"...It never gets better and may in fact be getting worse: the translation of all of the news and of all of Washington’s responses into a ledger of electoral pluses and minuses, a graph of rising and falling political fortunes, a narrative of competition between not just the parties but the would-be potentates within a party. On issue after issue, the sideshow swallows the substance, as politicians and the seemingly infinite ranks of political handlers join us journalists in gaming everything out, ad infinitum.

...What about the actual business of governing? Between all the preening, partisan cross-fire and of course fund-raising that consumes members of Congress, is there any space and energy for that?..."

WORDS.

For Your Consideration.

"I feel like I should get on board the Benghazi train with my Republican brethren. Everyone seems so committed to the notion that this is big and it goes right to the top. They can’t all be wrong, can they?

...The inquiry into the Benghazi tragedy is just part of the routine, except it appears that this episode won’t run its course. It is powered by some self-replenishing fuel that I don’t see. And politically, it has reached a point of diminishing return for Republicans. No less than five GOP-led committees are looking into this. We shouldn’t be doing nothing, but isn’t this overkill when voters have other priorities, like the economy?..."

THE WASHINGTON POST: Child’s play with the budget as Democrats and Republicans battle

WORDS.

"...By definition, a retirement crisis begins with a savings crisis. Consider: According to research summarized recently by the New America Foundation, “nearly half of Americans (43.6%) do not have enough savings to cover basic expenses if they were to lose their source of stable income. These 132.1 million ‘liquid asset poor’ Americans include many members of the middle class and upper middle class: more than a quarter of households earning between $55,465 and $90,000 per year — the entire range of which is above the median household income of $50,054 — have less than three months of liquid savings. Over 30% of all households do not have a savings account at all.”

Let’s emblazon these facts on our collective psyche. Millions of families who earn more than the median income have less than three months of savings put aside. Millions of people with less money are living paycheck to paycheck. Families who at least owned their own houses have had their net worth eviscerated by the housing meltdown, which blew out the backstop on which countless Americans depend..."
